When families come

Families come to us about low mood, anxiety, changes in sleep or eating, difficulty concentrating at school, or a hard year after a move between countries or schools. The first consultation is where we work that out together.

The first consultation

  • Time with a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist who works with teenagers.
  • Time with parent and teenager together, and time with your teenager alone.
  • Questions about what has been happening, development and school, family and physical health.
  • A written plan at the end: what the clinician recommends, how many sessions, what it will cost, and how parents will be involved.
About the first consultation →

What care can include

  • Assessment, including for ADHD, anxiety and low mood.
  • Individual therapy adapted for teenagers, such as CBT or ACT. Your clinician will tell you which approach they are using and why.
  • Sessions with parents, on their own or with your teenager.
  • Psychiatric care. If medication is considered, a psychiatrist discusses it with you and your teenager together, prescribes it, and reviews it in person.

What parents are told

Teenagers speak more openly when they know their sessions are private. At the start, your clinician agrees with you both what will be shared with parents.

You will always know the plan and how things are going, and you will be told straight away if there is any concern for your teenager's safety. What your teenager says in session stays private unless they agree to share it.

Consent

A parent or legal guardian gives consent for care for anyone under 18. We also ask for your teenager's own agreement and explain the plan to them directly.

Questions

Will I know what my teenager talks about in sessions?

You will know the plan and how things are going. The details stay between your teenager and the clinician, unless there is a concern for their safety, in which case you are told straight away.

My teenager does not want to come. What can I do?

You are welcome to come to the first consultation on your own and talk it through. Many teenagers agree to a session once they know it is private.

Can you assess ADHD in teenagers?

Yes. We assess ADHD in adolescents aged 12 to 17, using the parent's account and, where possible, reports from school.

Do you see children under 12?

Not on their own. Younger children can join family sessions, and we work with their parents. We don't offer individual therapy or developmental assessments for children under 12. If that is what you need, we will tell you where to look.

What if my teenager is not safe right now?

Nara is not an emergency service. If your teenager is at immediate risk, go to the nearest hospital emergency department, or call 119 extension 8 (Kementerian Kesehatan, free, 24 hours).
