EMDR therapy

EMDR therapy for trauma and distressing memories.

EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) is a structured therapy for the effects of trauma. The World Health Organization recommends it, with trauma-focused CBT, for post-traumatic stress disorder.

What it is used for

EMDR is used for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and for distressing memories that still feel present, such as after an accident, an assault, a sudden loss or a medical emergency.

How it works

  • Your psychologist first takes a full history and makes sure you have ways to manage distress before any memory work begins.
  • In memory sessions, you hold a memory in mind briefly while following side-to-side eye movements or taps. You do not need to describe it in detail.
  • The aim is for the memory to become less vivid and less upsetting.
  • Your psychologist checks how you are at the start and end of every session.

How long it takes

For a single event, EMDR can take a few sessions after the preparation. For repeated or long-term trauma it takes longer. Your written plan gives the number of sessions and the cost.

Questions

Will I have to talk about what happened in detail?

No. Your psychologist needs to understand what happened, but EMDR does not require you to describe the memory in detail.

How do I know if EMDR is right for me?

Your clinician will suggest it at the first consultation if it suits you. Trauma-focused CBT is the other main option, and they will explain both.
