What OCD is

OCD involves obsessions, which are unwanted thoughts, images or urges that keep returning and cause distress, and compulsions, which are things a person feels driven to do or think to ease that distress. It takes up time and gets in the way of daily life. It is common and treatable.

How we assess it

  • A first consultation about the thoughts, the rituals and how much of your day they take.
  • Standard questionnaires, such as the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale, repeated during treatment to track change.
  • Questions about mood, anxiety and anything else that may be affecting you.

Treatment

The recommended psychological treatment for OCD is CBT that includes exposure and response prevention. With your psychologist, you face the thoughts and situations that trigger the urge, in small planned steps, and practise not carrying out the compulsion.

  • CBT with exposure and response prevention, with a clinical psychologist.
  • Medication prescribed by a psychiatrist when it would help, usually an SSRI, reviewed in person.
  • Both together, with your psychiatrist and psychologist working from the same plan.

Questions

Do I have to stop all my rituals at once?

No. Exposure and response prevention works in small steps that you plan with your psychologist.

Some of my thoughts feel too uncomfortable to say out loud. Is that common?

Yes. Unwanted thoughts like these are a common part of OCD, and your clinician will have heard similar ones before. You can describe them in your own time.

Do you see adolescents with OCD?
