Burnout

Treatment for burnout.

Burnout builds from work stress that has gone on too long. We look at work, sleep and health together, and check for depression and anxiety, which often come with it.

What burnout is

In its classification of diseases (ICD-11), the WHO describes burnout through three features: exhaustion, growing distance from or cynicism about your job, and reduced effectiveness at work. The WHO classes it as an occupational phenomenon.

Its signs overlap with depression and anxiety, so the first consultation checks for both.

How we work with it

  • A first consultation about your work, sleep, health and life outside work.
  • Screening for depression, anxiety and sleep problems.
  • Therapy with a clinical psychologist, such as CBT or ACT, on what is keeping the exhaustion going and what you want to change.
  • If depression or anxiety is also present, treatment for that as well, including medication from a psychiatrist when it would help.

Questions

Is burnout the same as depression?

No. Burnout is tied to work, while depression affects every part of life and is a medical condition. The two often occur together, and the assessment checks for both.

Will my employer find out?

Only if you choose to tell them. If your employer pays, they receive the receipt, and nothing about your care is shared without your written consent.
