Schema therapy is a structured therapy for long-standing patterns in how people feel, think and relate to others. It was developed by the psychologist Jeffrey Young and builds on CBT.

Schema therapy is used when difficulties are long-standing and keep returning, such as depression that comes back, recurring problems in relationships, or patterns that began in childhood. It has research support for chronic depression and for some personality difficulties, such as borderline personality disorder.
Schema therapy usually takes longer than CBT, often many months and sometimes a year or more. Your written plan gives the number of sessions and the cost, and you review it together as you go.
