Why sleep is part of our care

Long-term studies find that people with insomnia are around twice as likely to go on to develop depression. Anxiety, depression, trauma and ADHD all commonly disturb sleep, and untreated sleep apnea can cause low mood, poor concentration and daytime tiredness that look like depression or ADHD.

Treating sleep often helps the rest of treatment work, and one team looks after both.

What we see

  • Insomnia: trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or waking too early.
  • Suspected obstructive sleep apnea: loud snoring, pauses in breathing, waking unrefreshed.
  • Body clock problems, including shift work, jet lag and very late sleep in teenagers.
  • Restless legs and frequent movements during sleep.
  • Nightmares and disturbed sleep after trauma.

Level 2 sleep studies

A Level 2 sleep study is a full overnight recording of your sleep, also called polysomnography. Small sensors record brain activity, eye and muscle movement, heart rhythm, breathing, airflow, blood oxygen and leg movements.

No technician needs to sit up with you, so you sleep in your own bed at home. A doctor reads the full recording and goes through the results with you.

Not everyone needs a sleep study. Insomnia is usually diagnosed and treated without one. Your clinician recommends a study when they suspect sleep apnea or another sleep disorder, or when sleep has not improved with treatment.

Treatment

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), the recommended first treatment for long-term insomnia, with a clinical psychologist.
  • A review of any medication that may be affecting sleep. Your psychiatrist takes sleep into account when prescribing.
  • If a sleep study shows sleep apnea, an explanation of the treatment options and a referral to the right specialist where needed.

Questions

Do I need a referral?

No. You can register directly, and the first consultation decides whether a sleep study would help.

How is a Level 2 study different from a hospital sleep lab?

A hospital sleep lab (Level 1) records the same core signals with a technician watching overnight. A Level 2 study records them without a technician in the room, so you can sleep in your own bed. For a few conditions, such as suspected narcolepsy, a sleep lab is needed, and we refer you to one.

Do you see teenagers for sleep problems?

Yes, as part of our care for ages 12 to 17. Whether a sleep study is suitable is decided at the assessment.
