Acceptance and commitment therapy

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).

ACT helps you make room for difficult thoughts and feelings, so they have less hold over what you do, and spend more of your time on what matters to you.

What it is used for

ACT has research support for anxiety, depression, work stress and burnout, and for living with chronic pain or a long-term illness. It is also used with adolescents.

How sessions work

  • Mindfulness skills for noticing thoughts and feelings without being carried along by them.
  • Working out what matters most to you, in work, relationships and health.
  • Small, practical steps toward those things, agreed between sessions.

How long it takes

A course of ACT is often around 8 to 16 sessions, depending on what you come with. Your written plan gives the number of sessions and the total cost before you begin.

Questions

Is ACT the same as mindfulness?

Mindfulness is one part of ACT. The other part is acting on what matters to you, step by step.

Can ACT be combined with medication?

Yes. If you also see one of our psychiatrists, they work from the same plan as your psychologist.
