Cognitive behavioral therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

CBT is a structured therapy with a set number of sessions. You and your psychologist work on the thoughts and behaviors that keep a difficulty going, with practice between sessions.

CBT is a recommended treatment for depression, anxiety disorders, panic, OCD, insomnia and some difficulties after trauma. It is also adapted for adolescents.

How sessions work

  • Goals agreed at the start and reviewed as you go.
  • Regular sessions, at a frequency set out in your plan.
  • Short questionnaires to track progress.
  • Practice between sessions, such as keeping a record or gradually trying something you have been avoiding.

How long it takes

A course of CBT is often between 6 and 20 sessions, depending on the difficulty. Your written plan gives the number of sessions and the total cost before you begin.
